Background of the Study

Fire safety education is critical in public schools to ensure that students and staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to fire-related emergencies. In many parts of Nigeria, including Kano State, inadequate fire safety measures and awareness have led to tragic accidents in schools (Adeyemi & Yusuf, 2024). Fire safety programs in schools teach students, teachers, and staff how to prevent fires, evacuate safely, and administer basic emergency response techniques. In Kano State, the effectiveness of fire safety education programs and the readiness of public schools to handle fire emergencies remain under-researched, posing a significant risk to the safety of the school population.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the recognized importance of fire safety in educational institutions, many public schools in Kano State lack comprehensive fire safety education programs. There is limited awareness among students, teachers, and staff regarding fire prevention and emergency response procedures. Consequently, inadequate preparedness and response during fire emergencies can lead to severe consequences.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the level of fire safety education and awareness in public schools in Kano State.

2. To evaluate the effectiveness of fire safety training and emergency response strategies in these schools.

3. To identify barriers to the effective implementation of fire safety education and emergency response.

Research Questions

1. To what extent is fire safety education provided in public schools in Kano State?

2. How effective are the current fire safety and emergency response programs in schools?

3. What challenges hinder the successful implementation of fire safety education in public schools?

Research Hypotheses

1. Fire safety education is not adequately provided in public schools in Kano State.

2. Fire safety training and emergency response programs in public schools are ineffective in ensuring student and staff safety.

3. Lack of resources and staff training impedes the successful implementation of fire safety education in public schools.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on public schools in Kano State and will examine their fire safety education programs. Limitations may include differences in school facilities, varying levels of staff training, and challenges in obtaining accurate data from school authorities.

Definitions of Terms

• Fire Safety Education: Training programs aimed at teaching individuals how to prevent, respond to, and escape from fires.

• Emergency Response: The actions taken immediately following an emergency, such as fire drills, evacuations, and first aid.
